The Price of Pride

Pride. Depending on your worldview, pride can evoke a variety of feelings. Some good and some less good. 😏 Let’s not mince words and drag this out, lol. Let’s see what the Bible has to say about pride.

Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. -Proverbs 11:2

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirt before a fall. -Proverbs 16:18

A man’s pride brings him low, But honor shall uphold the humble in spirit. -Proverbs 29:23

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. -James 4:6

The wicked one in the pride of his countenance will not seek, inquire for, and yearn for God; all his thoughts are that there is no God [so He never punishes].-Psalm 10:4

And I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze.-Leviticus 26:19

Shall I go on? I think we get the picture of the price of pride. Quite expensive…disgrace, destruction, falling, lowliness, opposition to God, unbelief, Godlessness, iron and bronze where there should be rain and fruitfulness, etc. Wow! How do we get involved in that way of life? Why is pride on the hearts of so many people, Christians as well? I believe it’s a lack of identity. I know, I know, you may be thinking “some pride is good.” I beg to differ, even though I need help in that area too. Pride is not just thinking highly of yourself, but also thinking too low of yourself. Any thoughts outside of what God says about you are rooted in pride. 😱

Pride is also self-reliance. Either saying “I got this, I don’t need anything or anyone,” or saying “I’m not equipped to be who you are calling me to, God. Can you find someone else?” Both ways convey the idea that we are making decisions on our own without the help of our Beloved Father.

Come on, now, does pride really cost? Of course it does. Missed opportunities, misunderstandings, miscommunication. How many times have we prayed and expected God to answer the way we wanted Him to answer? When He doesn’t, maybe we cop a ‘tude or just give up altogether or maybe have an extended hissy fit? 😡

I am reminded of Naaman in 2 Kings 5 who had leprosy and became quite angry, probably downright indignant. Not only did Elisha not come out to see him but also told him to dip in the dirty Jordan River seven times! Naaman almost missed his healing because of his pride. Thank God He had a humble minded servant to talk some sense into him, lol!

As I am writing this, I sense the Lord so strongly, shining a spotlight into our lives. What have we told Him that we are not going to do because it doesn’t line up with our pre-conceived notions? What have we missed out on because pride has robbed us blind? Whether we think too high or too low, how many times have we missed it? 🤔

Wait, wait, wait! Don’t throw in the towel because of disgust or despair! There’s hope—every day; there are new mercies! (Lamentations 3:22-23) Just repent and ask the Lord to help you stay humble before Him. Just do what He tells you to do. (John 2:5) He wants His promises to be realized in Your life but not so you can get the Glory, that’s His alone! (Isaiah 42:8)

Seriously, everything stands to benefit if we kick the pride habit and walk in humility before our King. From relationships to health to finances to education to careers to ministry, you name it. Humility equals success in God’s eyes! 👌~mnm
